Jim’s Handy Home Hints – Hurricane Preparation

  1. Move inland away from the storm, if your locality has an “mandatory” Evacuation in place, please leave the area as soon as possible.
  2. Know your areas “Evacuation Zone,’ this information is posted at roadway intersections in each City, usually on telephone or utility poles. Please follow the information posted on this signage.
  3. Build a family “Preparedness Disaster kit” always keep its contents up-to-date. Have a kit in each family vehicle in case one is inoperable.
  4. If you live in an area that you can’t leave, you should board up all windows, tie-down or secure all lose items that may blow around and cause additional property damage
  5. Purchase an Emergency Broadcast Radio to stay updated on Storm conditions and emergency announcements.
  6. Know where to hunker down inside your home, usually in the center of the building, a closet or bathroom without a window
  7. Keep your medications in a safe dry place where you know where they are.
  8. Secure your pets, maintain food and water for them
