About SCDHC

SCDHC’s mission is to use a holistic approach to create viable, thriving and sustainable communities.

We achieve this by providing residential and commercial development, homeownership education and counseling, financial counseling and coaching, employment services, and supportive programs to low-income families throughout the Central Virginia region.

With over thirty years of experience, we use our expertise to help individuals and families build their wealth and prepare them for homeownership. SCDHC is one of the largest single-family non-profit housing developers in the Richmond Metro Area and has developed over 450 affordable single-family homes. Through our HUD-approved housing counseling program, we’ve helped thousands of individuals and families purchase homes.

With the launch of the Financial Opportunity Center in 2019, SCDHC offers employment placement and coaching services, credit and budget counseling, and benefits coaching in English and Spanish to help our clients move towards greater confidence and financial stability.

We’re passionate about working with families and individuals every step of the way.

Racial Equity at SCDHC

Racial equity, diversity, and inclusion are at the center of our work.

Since 1988, SCDHC’s affordable housing development in Richmond has been centered in historically redlined neighborhoods.

Since 1988, SCDHC’s affordable housing development in Richmond has been centered in historically redlined neighborhoods.

SCDHC is the oldest historically Black-led, affordable housing non-profit in Central Virginia and 72% of our full-time staff, 81% of our client-facing staff, and 80% of our leadership team are Black or Latinx. Due to this identity and the expansion of our services through Central Virginia, SCDHC is uniquely suited to provide affordable homeownership, housing counseling, and financial opportunity services to Black and Latinx individuals and families in Richmond and the surrounding counties.

SCDHC has also partnered with Virginia Community Voice on their community engagement to better understand the needs of residents of the Richmond Highway Corridor (formerly Jefferson Davis Corridor) and has modeled its programs to meet these needs.

SCDHC’s launch of the Financial Opportunity Center and our emphasis on creating pathways to affordable homeownership opportunities is the direct result of listening to the needs of Black and Latinx members of the community. As a result, 97% of SCDHC’s clients are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color) and the Financial Opportunity Center is the only FOC in Virginia that offers its services in English and Spanish. SCDHC is an adaptive, innovative organization with a 30+ year history of influencing racial diversity, equity, and inclusion in Central Virginia through our services and advocacy at the city, county, and state level.
