35 Years of Building Communities

 
 

A Before and After look at SCDHC’s first subdivision, Paradise Place. The 30-home project was completed in 1995 and received the Governor’s Award for Excellence for Outstanding Development in Difficult to Develop Areas.

SCDHC’s 16-home subdivision at Mimosa Creek connected two historic neighborhoods in the Bellmeade Community in Richmond’s Southside.

 

SCDHC Celebrates the launch of Virginia’s first English/Spanish Bilingual Financial Opportunity Center with LISC and Altria in 2019.

 

SCDHC celebrates the completion of our 32-unit Matthews Subdivision with community residents, partners, lenders, and representatives of the City of Richmond in May, 2021.

 

One of SCDHC’s homebuyers, Ms. Coleman, speaks at the launch of the Wells Fargo WORTH BIPOC Initiative in October, 2022. The Initiative aims to create 5,000 new BIPOC homeowners in the Richmond area by 2025.

 

Dianna Bowser presents at the Spirit of Virginia award ceremony in January 2023. SCDHC was the first recipient of the award, which celebrates those who embody the true spirit of Virginia through service and dedication.

1988 – Church members in the Old South District mobilize after expressing concerns about safety, economic opportunity, and housing stability in the community. SCDHC is founded on March 25, 1988 and sets out to accomplish its goal of alleviating joblessness, inadequate housing, and conditions that result in substandard education.  

1993 – SCDHC completes first revitalization effort, resulting in the construction of 11 detached single-family homes in Phase I of a development named Paradise Place.  

1995 –  

  • Construction is completed on Phase II of Paradise Place, bringing an additional 19 detached single-family homes into the community.  

  • SCDHC receives the Governor’s Award for Excellence for Outstanding Development in Difficult to Develop Areas. 

1998 – SCDHC receives grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD), resulting in the creation of the Housing Counseling Program, as well as our certification as a HUD-approved Housing Counseling Agency. 

2003 – In partnership with the City of Richmond, Richmond Redevelopment & Housing Authority, BB&T, and Civic Associations, SCDHC expands for the first time outside of Richmond’s Southside to begin a revitalization project in Carver/Newtowne West. 

2006 – SCDHC begins construction on our Sandston Plateau Senior Apartments project, a 100-unit, independent living, affordable housing complex for seniors. 

2007 –  

  • SCDHC completes the development of 5 new and 4 rehabilitated single-family homes in Carver/Newtowne East.  

  • Dianna Bowser becomes the Executive Director of SCDHC. 

2008 – SCDHC acquires vacant land on Mimosa Street for the development of 16 new single-family units in partnership with the City of Richmond, HUD, Virginia Community Capital, and local civic associations. 

2012 – Dianna Bowser becomes the President and CEO of SCDHC. 

2013 – SCDHC embarks on a multifamily development project in partnership with Gerald Burr, Jr. of Canterbury Enterprises to develop 70 attached townhomes for rental to 60% and below AMI. This project was partially funded through Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). 

2017 – The New Mimosa Creek Subdivision is developed in the Bellmeade Community, resulting in the construction of 16 single family units.  

2019 –  

  • SCDHC launches Virginia’s first English/Spanish bilingual Financial Opportunity Center in partnership with LISC Virginia and Altria. 

  • SCDHC purchases the 714 High Street building in Petersburg, Virginia, officially scaling our affordable housing development and supportive services to Petersburg. 

2020 – SCDHC responds to housing insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic by connecting over 1,900 households with over $7.6 million in emergency rent assistance through the Rent Relief Program. 

2021 –  

  • SCDHC completes the development of 32 new homes in the Matthews Subdivision at Chestnut Hill in Highland Park.  

  • SCDHC completes the second phase of Warwick Townhomes in partnership with Gerald Burr, Jr. of Canterbury Enterprises. 

2022 – SCDHC's President and CEO, Dianna Bowser, receives the 2022 Virginia Housing Alliance Game Changer Award, recognizing her accomplishments advancing racial equity, housing affordability, and homeownership in her time with SCDHC. 

2023 –  

  • SCHDC is awarded the Fannie Mae Innovation Challenge Grant to scale our housing development and supportive services to Emporia, Virginia.  

  • SCDHC receives the first Spirit of Virginia award of 2023 from the Virginia First Lady and Governor Youngkin
